James Dondero has spent several years in the credit and equity markets, acquiring vast experience that has helped him build a business empire. Before founding Highland Capital Management in 1993, James first worked for many companies.
Since its inception, Highland Capital Management has been responsible for pioneering various products in the credit and equity markets and, in particular, the Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO). The company is further known for producing world-class products like hedge funds, mutual funds, ETFs, REITs, private equity funds etc.
Experience before Highland Capital Management
The very first job James Dondero took up after graduating from the University of Virginia was a job as an analyst at the Morgan Guaranty Training program. He left this job in 1985 when a new opportunity to join American Express. He worked for the company from 1985 to 1989 served in two roles, first as a corporate bond analyst and afterward as a portfolio manager.
The next role, which was a big break in James’ career, is his role at Protective Life. He took the responsibility of overseeing the growth of the GIC subsidiary of Protective Life, and by the time he left the company, he had helped it grow to $2 billion. He finally left the company in 1993, and this was when he decided to start his entrepreneurship journey, he founded the renowned Highland Capital Management.
The success James has had and continues to have in business is a reflection of many achievements he has had in life. For example, during his time at the University of Virginia, James Dondero attained the highest honors where he undertook a dual major in Accounting and Finance.
Further, James Dondero is a Certified Public Accountant, a qualified Chartered Financial Analyst, and a Certified Management Accountant (CMA).
