Andrew Lazarus is a well-known hotelier in Sydney.

He recently purchased the Beach Hotel Merewether, an iconic pub in Newcastle.

It had been owned by two families, Bale and Twohil, for more than four decades.

The price expectation for the prime real estate at Frederick St is over $20 million.

Though the actual sale price is not yet disclosed, Lazarus says he is ready to go to great lengths to have the pub affectionately called “The Beaches” in his possession.

He adds that his family had been after the pub because it offered a stunning coastal view and was glad that the time had come to acquire it.

Lazarus’s family has been in the hospitality business for thirty years.

Their platform, The Eastern Hotels Groups, manages and operates an extensive portfolio of assets, including the Shoal Bay Country Club, the Eastern in Bondi Junction, Hamilton, the Exchange Hotel, Granville, the Vauxhall Inn, Motor Inn, and Warwick Farm.

After buying Shoal Bay Country Club, he refurbished it to a 6.5 million dollar establishment.

He hopes to reflect the same developments in Merewether Avenue.

He plans to improve product offerings, especially food and beverages, to dramatically increase patronage.

His son, Peter, will be in charge of the day-to-day management of the Beach Hotel.

Lazarus says that the pub is part of Newcastle’s landscape and has unbeatable views that he is excited to exploit.

The prized pub asset in Newcastle was listed for sale in October by an expression of interest campaign.

It was marketed by Moore & Moore Real Estate and Knight Frank, where they reported national interest.

Lifestyle and Affordability have fueled an appeal towards the Newcastle market.

According to Andrew Lazarus, the Sydney pub market is currently unaffordable and is just getting its share now.

He adds that they have chosen according to their lifestyle, and they would love to work and live in Newcastle.
